Can anyone tell me whether Quicken Dlx 2002 is able to back-up data directly to a CD-RW? If not, is there a work-around? Ever since installing a DVD burner to replace my CD burner, I can't burn a backup directly to CD. I know there's a problem with this in Quicken 2004, but don't recall it ever being a problem in Quicken 2002, right? To be honest, I can't recall whether backing up to CD-RW worked with the CD burner or not, as I was backing up to a zip drive at the time. P.S: I've bought Quicken Dlx 2004, but haven't installed it yet because of what I've read about backing up to CD. I got it free after rebate, so I'm not in a real hurry to try it out. Nonetheless, if there's a problem with Quicken Dlx 2002, would installing 2004 solve it (if a work-around has been found)? So, I re-installed my DVD Burner (Sony DRU-510A). Win XPPro detected and installed it automatically. However, I still can't backup directly to CD. I _can_, however, backup to the hard drive and then copy the backed up files to the CD. ![]() Now my question: What files should comprise the backup? I get the following 5 files: data.qdf; data.qtx; data.qel; data.qph; and data.qsd. Are these all the files needed to comprise a complete backup? I seem to recall getting an additional file that started with 'Q3' in the past, when I was backing up to a subdirectory. (This latest backup was to the root directory on the CD-RW). Click to expand. All the files whose names begin with the name of your Quicken data fileset (that fileset always contains at least the.qdf file) should be backed up. One problem with relying on remembering which files are part of the fileset, is that which files are in in the fileset can change. They can change when a new version of Quicken comes out; and they can change depending on what capabilities you utilize in Quicken (if you don't do tax planning, you won't have a.qtx file). The best way I know to guarantee to get the right files in your backup is to have a folder (or folders) specifically to hold the Quicken backup, use Quicken to backup to that folder; then copy that folder to your external backup device. Hi, John - and BRH. Quicken keeps the absolutely current version of our data fileset right in the QuickenW folder. (Many of us feel that is not very smart, but that's the way it is.) So, if we are going to use something other than the built-in backup procedure, we might as well just do this: Xcopy C: QuickenW QDATA.* W: QuickenW where C: is the drive that holds our working copy of QuickenW, we are using Intuit's default name (QDATA) for our data file, and W: is our CD/RW or other burner drive. Many variations are possible, of course, but this should do what needs to be done. We can do it from a Run prompt, or from a 'DOS' window, or by making it into a batch file. I like Xcopy.exe because it uses memory a little better in making the move (It was a LOT better back when 64 MB was a LOT of RAM.), but the Copy command works just as well. You can name the backup folder whatever you like, of course. The CD/DVD media must have been formatted so that it 'can be used like a floppy disk', using something like InCD, often bundled with Nero. I agree with John that the Q3.dir file is unnecessary. Even if we delete one copy, Quicken will just create a new one. ![]() © CreditDonkey Quicken set out to create a program that was at least comparable to its sibling, Quicken for Windows.
